the event
We recently organized a very successful 2023 Pacific-Northwest Spring SABBS Appraisal and Show on May 20th in Enumclaw, Washington. We are proud to share the results here, both our own, as well as the collective outcomes with participation, appraisals, and show results.
It has always been a challenge to bring together larger numbers of Boerboels for SABBS events. But the pandemic made things extremely difficult. There was a period of several years when at best we had video appraisals and at worst we had no appraisals whatsoever.
However, this year those trends began reversing. We are pleased to report that we had 21 dogs participate in the appraisals and 22 dogs in the show. Even better, most of the participants at the appraisal and show were new members. The show in particular was a rare treat, as SABBS shows in the United States occur extremely infrequently.

OVERALL - APPRAISAL AND SHOW RESULTS
For those unfamiliar with SABBS, and accustomed to registries like AKC, it may be worth explaining that in SABBS dogs must be appraised to qualify for breeding. Each dog is appraised to evaluate how well it conforms to the breed standard.
The basis for this appraisal is a linear evaluation system that is more often used in livestock evaluation than dogs. Registered dogs must score 75% or higher out of 100% to qualify for inclusion in the breeding registry. This system and standard help to ensure that only appropriate dogs are bred.
This is a subject worth detailing further at another time, but for now this information is sufficient to orient you with the following results:

paragon boerboels - appraisal and show results
We participated in both the appraisal and the show with four dogs.
All our dogs received good or excellent appraisal scores, which when combined with their successful health testing, helps to ensure that they all likely have a place in our program. Paragon Oso and Paragon Bunny, who we have introduced in other blog posts here on the website, both qualified for the breeding registry with their appraisal scores.
But two dogs in particular had exemplary results in both the appraisal and show, and it is worth calling out their achievements separately. Since we are running late with website updates, this post marks these dogs’ debuts to the larger world. But we hope to have full profiles published for them soon.
clover k bubba
Bubba is a three-year-old male, and we have owned him since he was one-year old. He has proven himself to be an excellent stud that outproduces himself, and he has played a vital role in our program. He has a commanding physical presence and is contrarily both a very serious yet playful and charismatic dog. As the above results detail, in the Appraisal he was Dog of the Day and Highest Scoring Male of the Day. Then in the show he went on to take Reserve in Show.
paragon naalia
Naalia is only one-and-a-half years old and we produced her out of Roxanne and Cain. Naailia’s mother, Roxanne, was not a SABBS-registered dog. So Naalia’s first appraisal was intended to place her in the development registry, a provisional status that allows worthy Boerboels to fully transition into SABBS.
The threshold for making it into the development registry is slighty higher at 80%, which helps ensure only higher-quality dogs are transitioning into SABBS. We were very proud to have Naalia attain a score of 82.4%. Since she is such a young dog with at least another 6 months to a year to reach full maturity, we expect her to still improve significantly, and hope to reappraise her at a future SABBS appraisal.
Equally noteworthy was her participation in the show competition, which was Naalia’s first show in any registry. She went on to take Best of Show out of 22 dogs. The judges noted her exquisite movement as one of the things that set her apart in the competition.
general photos - appraisals and show
We were very busy working with other SABBS member to manage, run, and coordinate the appraisals and the show. But we did manage to squeeze in a few snapshots that we are including here for all to enjoy.
